Association for Rural Women's Education for Liberation (ARWEL) is an organization that works with rural women; they also work with local youth in issues of health and hygiene. Since the tsunami, they have been working with PREPARE, an NGO doing relief work in that area.
We have also been working with them since the tsunami. In the past we have used their guidance in identifying unserviced groups of people who were affected by the tsunami. Through them we have provided educational and recreational items for school children, as well as ration kits for 47 families in Uyyalikuppam. We are currently working with them on providing material for 6 Anganwadis around the Kalpakkam area using directed funds from a donor.
ARWEL is also working on alternate livelihood training for tsunami-affected women. They have started tailoring classes, and are catering to the local community. They are confident that they have the market for all their products. They rely on the self-help groups to market their wares. They are currently working on giving us proposals for the many training options.
