Bhoomika Trust has undertaken a project to support livelihood restoration and training for the affected families impacted by the December 26, 2004 Tsunami in the coastal communities of Tamilnadu, India.
The Trust will provide support in the form of funding the expenditure towards recurring expenses such as salaries, materials and supervision for a tailoring training project over a period of six months for up to 1800 persons in 15 tailoring centres in Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chennai and Thiruvallur districts who will be able to sustain themselves by generating income after their period of training. Unorganised Workers Federation will be the lead Implementation Agency in these districts and will monitor the project. Ms G K Krishnanveni, President of Garland Service Society (108) with her considerable expertise in tailoring training will offer her Technical Support.
The Centres will be located at
- Ariyanadu street, Nambiyar Nagar, Beach Road and Cooks Road in Nagapattinam District
- Killai, Parankipettai, Thamanampettai and Chankilikuppam in Cuddalore District
- Tazhankadu, Kunnimedu, Anumanthai and Pillaichavadi in Villupuram District
- Kasimedu, Foreshore Estate (Srinivasapuram), Triplicane and Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam in Chennai District
- Tiruvotriyur, Ennorekuppam and Pazhaverkadu in Thiruvallur District
Skill and Capacity building
Bhoomika Trust has undertaken a project to support livelihood restoration and Training for Skill and Capacity Building towards rehabilitation of lives and livelihoods Impacted by the December 26, 2004 Tsunami in the Coastal Communities of Tamil Nadu, India.
Bhoomika Trust and Indians for Collective Action (ICA) will be providing support for the training of 100 Masons and 50 Site Engineers/ Supervisors in Hazard – Resistant housing over a period of one year, conducted at the Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu.
Bhoomika Trust and Indians for Collective Action (ICA) will jointly fund the expenditure towards salaries, materials and supervision for this training at the Gandhigram Rural Institute. This training programme will be conducted over a year in batches, with the period of Training being 30 days. It will deliver 150 trained Masons and Supervisors who will be qualified to work in the construction of Hazard – Resistant housing and can be engaged in the reconstruction of Tsunami affected houses. The Gandhigram Rural Institute, based in Dindigul district, will be the lead Implementation Agency and the project will be monitored by The Director, Rural Technology Centre of the Institute.
