Bhoomika's Interventions in Rehabilitation

Area 1: Continue Participating in Psycho-Social Support Programs.

For women, orphans, families who lost loved ones, and men who lost livelihoods.
Participate in 'Train-the-Trainer' programs, publish counseling guidelines, source and place volunteers in the field.
Dr. Lakhsmi Ravikanth, Trustee of Bhoomika, and a practicing Psychological Counselor, is the Bhoomika champion for this intervention.

Area 2: Take Part in a State-Level NGO Resource/ Knowledge Center in Chennai.

Objective would be to be able to provide access to village/ sector/ beneficiary level information from Chennai.
Present alternate Technical Guidelines and Resource lists for shelters, sanitation, health, children and women's issues, etc.
Connect with District Level Resource Centre(s) and the T.N. Government at the State Level.
Active discussions are underway with the NGO Resource Center in Nagai and UNDP to determine our role in this area.

Area 3: Partner with SIFFS* and Corp Donors to build a Habitat for 200 families in Nagapattinam District (Tharangambadi or Chinnangudi).

*South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies
Permanent shelters, infrastructure.
Potable water systems, and other utilities.
Storm shelter/ community center.
Alternative livelihoods pilot project.
SIFFS will be the lead implementing agency, Bhoomika will monitor and coordinate the effort.
Budget: Rs 3.5 crores (approx $ 800,000).
Philips India has expressed strong interest in partnering with Bhoomika/ SIFFS in this project.

Area 4: Long-Term Community Trust Fund to support education and development of coastal communities.

R & D in fisheries.
Set up cooperatives.
Strengthen women's groups.
Upgrade education.
Alternative skills for youth.
Target: Rs 30 to 50 crores ($7 to $11mil).
Bhoomika is working with several NRI groups, corporates, and other International NGOs who have expressed an interest in participating in this fund.

Area 5: Set up a Livelihood Fund for Unorganized workers (Fishing and Non-Fishing) and other Marginalized communities affected by the Tsunami.

Replace lost livelihood tools and markets (e.g. tailoring machines, alternative markets for basket-makers, etc).
Alternate skills and small enterprises such as Brick-making and Masonry-training for upcoming shelter construction activity.
Target: Rs 50 - 100 lakhs ($113 to $226k).
Active discussions are underway with the NGO Resource Center in Nagai and UNDP to determine our role in this area.

Area 6: Partner with others in a civil-society driven disaster management program and coastal communications network.

Partner with groups already doing this in Gujarat and elsewhere (e.g. SEEDS, DMI, etc).
Partner with business houses in the communications backbone.
Partner with community groups in content development (e.g. Nalamdana of Chennai).
