Proposed tailoring training center at Kadampadi Camp

Arya Nadu Street temporary shelter – World Vision temporary shelter
Contact : Gunavathi (92454 00230)

At Geetha Ramakrishnan's suggestion (of the Unorganized Workers Federation, Chennai), we visited the site where the tailoring classes will be held. We met Gunavathi (of the Mahalir Sangam), the person in charge of the training program in that area. She has 15 years experience with the Mahalir Sangam and seems to be a very popular figure in that area. As part of masonry training women themselves have built the shed where the class is to be held.

The tailoring classes have not started yet as the tailoring machines have not arrived. Geetha Ramakrishnan is taking care of providing the equipment. The classes are to be held in three locations in that area. According to Gunavathi, women have shown some interest in these classes; however she is confident that once the machines are in place people will automatically flock to these classes. She hopes that the tailoring classes are more than just the basics; she wants to expand the course to include embroidery, etc.

Observations
•  Gunavathi has a lot of experience working with the Mahalir Sangam
•  She seems very motivated and eager to start the program
•  There are no concrete ideas on marketing issues. Until now the Mahalir Sangam has been involved in many training programs such as the making of wire baskets, paper goods, etc. But all these products were for personal use only; these classes were primarily held to keep the women occupied, while teaching a skill
